Tapebook: Private Recorder
Privacy policy
Effective date: 25 October 2026
Tapebook: Private Recorder ("the App") records audio and turns speech into text on your phone. The speech engine runs on the phone itself. There is no account, the App has no permission to use the internet, and it does not send your recordings, transcripts or any personal data to us or to anyone else. This policy explains what stays on your device.
1. Recordings and transcripts
Your recordings, transcripts, marks, speaker names and summaries are stored in the App's private storage on your phone, which other apps cannot read. Transcripts are made on the phone by speech models that come with the App. The optional extra models (English Plus, European languages and speaker labels) are delivered by Google Play as part of the App, in the same way as an app update; the App sends nothing to get them. Uninstalling the App deletes everything it stored, apart from any files you have already shared or exported elsewhere. Android backup is switched off for the App, so your recordings are not copied to your Google account.
2. The microphone
The App asks for Android's microphone permission the first time you tap Record, and uses the microphone only while you are recording. While it records, Android shows a notification, and the App keeps recording, even if you lock the screen or switch to another app, until you stop it.
3. Speaker labels
If you turn on speaker labels (a Pro feature), the App makes a voiceprint for each stretch of speech: a list of numbers that lets it group speech by voice within that recording. Voiceprints are stored only with that recording on your phone, are never compared with other recordings or used to identify anyone, and are deleted with the recording or its transcript.
4. Summaries
On phones that support Gemini Nano, the App can ask Android's on-device AI service (AICore) to summarise a transcript. This runs on your phone; the text is not sent to Google or to us. On other phones the App picks key sentences from the transcript itself.
5. Files you import, share or export
If you import an audio or video file, you pick it with Android's file picker and the App keeps a private copy. When you share a recording or export a transcript, Android's share screen sends the file to the app or place you choose. The App never sends anything on its own.
6. Purchases
Tapebook Pro is sold through Google Play, as a one-time Lifetime purchase or a yearly subscription. Google Play handles the payment and tells the App which plan you have. We never see your card or payment details. The App keeps on your phone only whether Pro is on, which plan you have and, for a free trial, when it ends, so it can remind you two days before. You can cancel the yearly plan at any time in Google Play.
7. Notifications
The App shows notifications while it records or transcribes, and one reminder before a free trial you started on the phone ends. You can turn notifications off in Android settings.
8. Analytics and identifiers
The App does not include analytics, crash reporting or tracking tools, does not collect device identifiers, and does not send analytics or personal data to us or to any third-party service.
9. Recording other people
You are responsible for how you use the App. Please tell people you are recording and why, and stop if anyone objects. Recording or sharing a recording of someone without their agreement can break privacy law, and many schools, universities and workplaces have their own rules.
10. Children
The App is not designed for children under 13. It does not collect personal data from anyone, including children.
11. Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
