Tapebook

A voice recorder that writes everything down on your phone. Record a lecture, a meeting or a quick idea, then read it back with every word lit up as it plays. The speech engine runs on the phone itself, so your recordings and transcripts never leave it: no account, no uploads, and no internet permission at all.

Coming soon to Google Play

Free: unlimited recording, transcripts of recordings up to 15 minutes, and playback with every word highlighted. Tapebook Pro is a one-time Lifetime unlock or a yearly plan, and both unlock the same features. No weekly or monthly plans.

Questions

Is Tapebook free?

Yes. Recording is unlimited and free, recordings up to 15 minutes are transcribed in full (longer ones get their first 15 minutes), and playback highlights every word. Tapebook Pro is a one-time Lifetime unlock or a yearly plan, and both unlock the same features. The yearly plan can start with a 7 day free trial for new subscribers where Google Play offers it. No weekly or monthly plans.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. The speech engine runs on your phone, there is no account, and the app has no internet permission, so it cannot send your recordings or transcripts anywhere. Android backup is switched off for the app too. A recording only leaves the phone if you share or export it yourself.

What does Pro add?

Transcripts of any length, more accurate models (English Plus, and European languages covering 25 languages), speaker labels you can rename, importing audio and video files, export to text, subtitles, Markdown or Word, search across every transcript, and summaries made on the phone.

Which languages does it understand?

The free model is English. Pro adds English Plus, which makes about a fifth fewer mistakes, and European languages, which covers 25 languages. They download once through Google Play and then run on the phone.

How long does transcription take?

It depends on the phone. On a typical mid range phone an hour of audio takes several minutes, and long transcriptions carry on in the background with a progress notification. The app shows an estimate before it starts, and Settings has a speed test.

How accurate are the transcripts?

Clear speech close to the phone comes out well. Like any speech model, it can make mistakes with noise, music or people talking over each other, so check names, numbers and quotes against the recording. You can fix a word by pressing and holding its paragraph.

Can I record people without telling them?

Please do not. Tell people you are recording and why, and stop if anyone objects. Recording someone without their agreement can break privacy law, and many schools, universities and workplaces have their own rules.
